Hebrews 1

The opening of this chapter establishes the supremacy of Christ as the ultimate revelation of God to humanity. In contrast to the Old Testament prophets, who conveyed God's messages through various forms, God has now spoken definitively through His Son, Jesus Christ. This transition highlights the fullness of God’s communication, affirming Christ's divinity and His role in creation and redemption. The author emphasizes Christ's position as the heir of all things and the upholder of the universe, showcasing His authority over all creation.

Furthermore, the text differentiates between the status of angels and that of the Son, underscoring that Christ possesses an eternal throne and a kingdom marked by righteousness. Unlike angels, who serve as ministering spirits, the Son is portrayed as the eternal King who remains unchanged amid a world destined to fade away. This divine grandeur and unchanging nature of Christ reassure believers of His ultimate sovereignty and faithfulness, motivating them to place their trust in Him for salvation and eternal life.

This verse affirms the preeminence of Christ by attributing the act of creation directly to Him. The phrase "laid the foundation" indicates His role as the architect and creator of the universe, echoing Genesis 1, which emphasizes God's sovereignty over creation. Furthermore, the mention of "the works of your hands" highlights the personal involvement of Christ in creation, suggesting intentionality and care in the created order. This passage reinforces the understanding of Christ's divine nature as the eternal Word through whom all things were made (John 1:3), echoing the Reformed emphasis on the sovereignty of God in all aspects of existence.
